SKLaw regrets to advise that its Partner Emeritus, Sandy Sanford, passed away on January 27, 2022, in Austin, Texas, after unexpected complications from surgery.

During his long and legendary career, Sandy literally pioneered the practice and role of the lawyer-lobbyist in Texas state government. His work impacted the statutory framework of virtually every area of business, government, and political activity. He achieved recognition as one of the most influential lawyers in the country, and was consistently documented as one of the best lobbyists in Texas.

His many accolades include: One Hundred Most Powerful Lawyers in America, National Law JournalWho’s Who in the South and Southwest; and Best State Lobbyist, Texas Monthly. He also served as an adjunct professor at South Texas College of Law, lecturing on lobbying, legislation, and political participation.

Prior to SKLaw, he was a partner at the law firm of Vinson & Elkins in the Public Law Section. He started his legal career at the firm of Liddell, Sapp, Zivley, Hill & LaBoon.

Sandy was born in Lubbock, Texas. He received a B.A. and LL.B. from the University of Texas. While at UT, he served as president of the Student’s Association. His honorary associations and fraternities include Phi Delta Phi, Texas Cowboys, and Delta Tau Delta.

Sandy served on the Board of Directors for the Tejas Breakfast Club and the St. Charles Bay Hunt Club.

SKLaw will dearly miss his leadership and comradery, but above all, we’ll miss his wit, spirit, and compassion.
